Tennessean.com: Report Not

January 27th, 2008 | 11:05 am cdt

I routinely browse newspaper websites from many cities across the country(and the globe for that matter) but usually skip over the Nashville paper because they rarely report on anything relevant to the moment. This morning is no exception.

Tennessean.com has no mention of S.C. primary

Interestingly, around 9:30am on Sunday morning Tennessean.com has no mention of the South Carolina Primary on the home page. Maybe I’m crazy, but I would think people in Nashville would want to know what’s going on in a state like South Carolina which is not only 50 miles from our border but also shares many similar regional qualities. For instance, are S.C.’s results a precursor to those in Tennessee? Why or why not?

If that’s too much effort at least throw an AP story up front so we at least know what the results were.

The Memphis and Knoxville papers were talking about it. Chattanooga however, was on to much, much bigger things.

Chattanooga and mustaches

In addition, Tennessean.com recently took on a new look. It’s a step up, but they’re still providing problems for Safari viewers:

TV Logos from 1992

January 20th, 2008 | 6:15 pm cdt

When I was 12 I sent letters to a handful of TV stations across the country asking them to send back some type of promotional material with their logo on it. I recently came across all these logos in an old box and decided to put them up on Flickr.

WBFS Logo 1992

My favorite logo was WBFS channel 33 from Miami. It had that double 3D dropshadow action that didn’t make any logical sense but was bold and very readable. I grew up watching way too many cartoons on that station after school everyday. Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc.

Free TV

I also scanned in a pamphlet published by the National Association of Broadcasters called Free TV that really comes down hard on cable TV. They claimed with 75% of cable TV subscribers watching network shows during primetime, cable TV was basically useless. They also pointed out the high price of paying between $12 and $20 per month for television. If only the NAB could foresee what was to come.

Here are all the logos on Flickr.

Stay away from GameZnFlix

January 12th, 2008 | 3:18 pm cdt

We attempted to purchase a gift certificate through the GameZnFlix website only to have the site hang on us at the payment stage. So, with no confirmation number or email record of the transaction we called to make sure our card wasn’t charged. Customer service (Samantha) was clueless over the phone and naturally the charge showed up on our card .

Multiple calls later they’re still refusing to credit our card back claiming it’s a 14 day 4 week process. Needless to say, that’s a lie that’s almost laughable if they weren’t trying to steal our money.

They will be receiving one more call first thing Monday morning.

GameZnFlix has an atrocious ResellerRatings profile.

Update: Today marks the first time I’ve ever been hung up on by a CSR. We’ll be taking the issue up with our credit card company at this point.

Washington Monument Askew

January 7th, 2008 | 2:00 pm cdt

I’ve always been bothered by the fact that the Washington Monument isn’t quite in line with the White House (orange line). It’s placed in perfect arrangement between the Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial (blue line). The Washington Monument is almost in line with Virginia Avenue, but not quite (green line). It’s just a tad bit off the grid enough to really, really make my brain hurt. If we could get some engineers out there and figure out a way to move it a few hundred feet West, I think that would really make everyone feel a lot better.
