Washington Monument Askew

I’ve always been bothered by the fact that the Washington Monument isn’t quite in line with the White House (orange line). It’s placed in perfect arrangement between the Capitol Building and the Lincoln Memorial (blue line). The Washington Monument is almost in line with Virginia Avenue, but not quite (green line). It’s just a tad bit off the grid enough to really, really make my brain hurt. If we could get some engineers out there and figure out a way to move it a few hundred feet West, I think that would really make everyone feel a lot better.

  • Maybe they didn't want to disturb the secret underground network of tunnels.

I agree completely, I also don't buy the swamp reasoning because the foundation required for this monument would need to so way beyond the top layer of earth.
  • I'm going to call that out as lame, considering that entire lower area has been built up from marshland over the last couple hundred years. The Lincoln Memorial sits where water used to.

"Because of the swamplike nature of the ground at the planned cross-axis of the White House and the U. S. Capitol, the construction engineers located the site for the foundations about 100 yards to the southwest on ground with a rocklike bearing."
