Fuel Prices Officially too High

May 2nd, 2008 | 4:43 pm cdt

I’ve had a set dollar amount in my mind of what would be too much to pay at the pump. Today I hit that limit. I paid $3.50/gal., filling my tank at 12 gallons for a total of $42.00. That’s $2.00 more than what is acceptable in my mind.

The last few weeks I’ve been consciously trying to limit diving time. Planning out errands more carefully and trying to let up on the accelerator after coming to a stop.

Prices are brutal. Another dollar, maybe two per gallon, and I think we’ll really start to see some noticeable effects. Prices of goods climbing even higher, maybe even less people on the road.

A lot of people keep pointing to the high prices in Europe as a way of saying “We don’t have it that bad at all!” I know European fuel prices have always been higher than U.S. prices. My question is, have their prices tripled in the last few years like ours have or have European prices stayed level?

Regardless, even though Europe pays more, they also consume differently. A very large percentage of cars sold in Europe have diesel engines, which automatically doubles(or more) your fuel economy. Supposedly public transportation is also far, far more advanced than what we offer ourselves here.

Metro Bustin’ Bad Drivers

May 2nd, 2008 | 1:27 pm cdt

Metro Police have been pulling over reject drivers the last few weeks on Murfreesboro Road around the airport.

This morning, dude in front of me in a Caddy decided to whip around from the far-right lane into the far-left lane cutting people off in the process. All for no real reason, of course. Metro just happened to be the car behind me at the time. The police car slowly and calmly made its way from the right lane over to the far-left and proceeded to pull the Caddy over.

A couple weeks ago in the same stretch I was riding with the flow of traffic when someone flew by at about 70 (45mph speed limit on a six lane highway). At the bottom of the hill was Metro(not running radar) but saw what was happening and proceeded to bust the guy.

This instant vindication is quite nice.

European Automotive

April 21st, 2008 | 9:11 am cdt

It’s easy to use the ol’ blog to point out the negative, but today I want to use it to throw out a little praise.

Anyone in the Murfreesboro/Nashville area looking to have work done on German autos should give European Automotive a call.

They were the third place I took the Jetta trying to get an exhaust issue taken care of. (Third time is a charm.) They were able to diagnose and fix the problem quickly and the Jetta has never run so well. Seriously, it feels better at 127,000 miles than it did at 36,000 when I bought it.

EA was super knowledgeable and several weeks later everything is still as it should be!

Polizei Cheese

April 7th, 2008 | 1:30 pm cdt

Friday night Ernie, Jeff and I were down in Georgia to meet up with Alex Roy and a few of his other fans. Mr. Roy is known for his Gumball antics, but even more so for his record transcontinental drive from NY to LA in 31 hours and 4 minutes in his blue BMW M5.

Alex Roy's Polizei 144

A very nice guy, Alex was kind enough to sign my book, The Driver, (a great read) and various car parts from other folks.

At the signing everyone was getting into nicknames when MidnightCheese was brought up. Alex said the 144 in Polizei 144 came from a cheese shop near his apartment that had 144 types of cheese on-hand. So this was most appropriate.

Here’s my Flickr link to a few shots I took of his car, Polizei 144.

Rumor has it Alex left Athens in a hurry that night. Unfortunately, we ended up getting lost in Athens side streets before we could follow him out.

Racing, Video Games & Good Seafood

October 4th, 2007 | 11:40 pm cdt

I spent last weekend in Florida taking part in the bachelor activities for Ernie. We played way too much Halo 3, raced our cars around the Gainesville Raceway and consumed some excellent seafood down in Titusville. The only downside was realizing how terrible my car(not pictured) handles on the track. So now I crave something more.

More photos can be seen on Flickr.

Don’t ignore the Camry

September 20th, 2007 | 9:22 am cdt

Metro Police in Davidson county have an unmarked darkly tinted Camry that screamed by me this morning, siren and hidden lights flashing. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a police vehicle that wasn’t domestic.

One more model and make for you lead foot folks to watch out for.
