Linksys WMP54G with WPA on Ubuntu

January 17th, 2007 | 1:19 pm cdt

I recently installed a Linksys WMP54G on an Ubuntu box following this guide on the Ubuntu Forums. The process is remarkably easy. The best part is the super simple WPA setup. No messing with the monstrosity that is wpa_supplicant. No hacking around with ndiswrapper, either.

    We had to apply this patch in order to compile (from the same forum thread):

    My "make all" did not work when building the driver as downloaded from ralinktech.com. I had to comment out one line (197) in file RT61_Linux_STA_Drv1.1.0.0/Module/rtmp_main.c to get it to build:

    #if WIRELESS_EXT >= 12
    // net_dev->get_wireless_stats = RT61_get_wireless_stats;
    net_dev->wireless_handlers = (struct iw_handler_def *) &rt61_iw_handler_def;
    #endif

    The wireless.h file on my system has been changed to remove get_wireless_stats.
  • Yeah, I thought it would be some time before we started to see WPA become native, but there it is.

    It's basically just my home server that I can backup my notebook to. It also runs the webcam.

    I remember several years ago when I got a Netgear something or other working on an old Toshiba laptop using ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant. It really didn't seem like it was that bad, but I still remember doing font and video configuration for X11-3, which greatly increased my tolerance to difficulty.

    I shudder to think of how little of a life I had back then.

    It's pretty cool that WPA is starting to get native (right? I didn't read the article) for a few cards. Is this on your Ubuntu router?
