I haven't compiled through Fink, but that sounds like a good idea and worth a try. Some of the posts on the Darwine list have talked about the odd way the OS X kernel handles threads.

On the Linux side, I've had excellent results with wine under Ubuntu, but have had lots of problems with most other distros.

Are you compiling natively or through fink's libraries? The difference could be in the libpthread. I don't know what version Apple uses, or maybe they use their own custom thread library that is only roughly compatible with libpthread, which seems more likely since OSX's threading mechanism appears kind of odd. It would also seem odd to me that the Darwin folks would use the same BSD subsystem as Apple. One would think that there would be some upgrades and prerelease stuff since Darwin a testing ground as well as a source release. That's just my random thought on the problem though.

Even under *nix in certain wine versions I would get pthread-related crashes. Of course I couldn't read hex dumps, so I don't recall where the problem lied. Sometimes I think it was overaggressive optimization flags on my part.
