Long Time Gone

The Bravery

Spent this past weekend in Atlanta. We saw Weezer, The Bravery(pictured), and The Dead 60s down at the 99X Downtown Rocks show at the Underground. Basically Atlanta’s version of Dancin’ in the District. The crowd in Atlanta, however, makes Dancin’ in the District look like a couple guys watching a street performer. There was blood, there was puke, people passing out, crying… we saw fights, flesh, and people jumping off streetlights. And it was all free. It was so weird seeing Weezer play all these songs from 12-13 years ago. Some of the kids in the crowd were in their teens, which meant they were barely born when that first album came out. Crazy. The Bravery did very well, and the Dead 60s sound much better live than on their album.

Probably the second best part of Atlanta was riding their rail system, MARTA. It sure beats driving. There was quite the crowd riding the train after the show. We were jam-packed inside that thing. The few people riding from the airport who were on before the train hit downtown were in for a big surprise when thousands of people piled onto that train.

So, came back from Atlanta late Sunday night and headed out to Memphis to visit some friends from UT until Wednesday. Went down to Tunica and played at the Blackjack tables for the first time. Our dealer was exceptional, pretty much telling everyone at the table wether to hit or stand. Aside from Tunica it was nice to get down to Memphis and reminisce a little bit.

A most excellent break from the daily workflow, indeed.

The missing posts

July 13th, 2005 | 11:23 pm cdt

I feel like I’ve really been lacking in blog posts lately, so here is the post to end all posts to fill in all the empty holes. It’s all pretty random, so be warned.

I’ve seen War of the Worlds twice. I thought it was great. Very intense. Tom Cruise is slowly becoming the next Michael Jackson in terms of weirdness, but he did a good job in this movie.

Friday I’m heading down to Atlanta to chill with some peeps from school for the weekend. Monday I head to Memphis for three days to visit a few other friends from school.

Driving back from the movies on Sunday I saw a huge line of electrical crews and bucket trucks headed down south to help the victims of hurricane Dennis. It’s great to see others helping out that really don’t have to.

The Fantastic 4 sucked ass. When phrases from Donald Trump enter popular culture, there’s something wrong. There’s a scene where Dr. Doom goes to electrocute someone, and right beforehand he says, “You’re Fired.” The scene takes place in a boardroom/conferenceroom. The story was horrid. And what were they thinking making the Thing shorter than everyone else? Isn’t he supposed to be fairly large?

I paid-off my car! 2 years early.

My PowerBook is getting out of control. It’s taking its time going to sleep now-a-days. It runs HOT. The fans are on all the damn time. I can’t find any kind of stray process causing it; The processor usage is low. I’m waiting for my second hinge to break turning the computer into an extremely slim desktop machine. The CD-ROM/DVD is broken. A three year old laptop is just too slow for the amount of work I ask of it. I thought about upgrading the RAM, but that’s just going to mask the underlying problems. I just hope it lasts another year until the Mactels start showing up.

Ernie and I spent the last several weeks brewing our own beer. We cooked it up, let it sit in a 5 gallon bucket for 10 days, bottled it, let it sit for a couple weeks, drink, enjoy.

That’s it that’s all that’s all there is.

Video 101

July 10th, 2005 | 2:11 pm cdt

WKRN held Video 101 on Saturday, giving a few local bloggers a crash course on videography basics. It was definitely a worthwhile event that included hands-on activities, discussion, and even critique led by two of WKRN’s photogs, Joe Gregory and Mitch Jordan. We also got t-shirts and free lunch from Atlanta Bread Company, and you can’t beat that.

I failed to bring my camera, but there are a few shots posted at Terry Heaton’s blog, as well as Nashville is Talking.

Keep Right Except to Pass

July 2nd, 2005 | 9:52 pm cdt

I’m driving down Old Hickory which is a 4 lane road, and I’m in the left lane because I’m going to have to make a left turn in about an 8th of a mile. Naturally there’s a pick-up in front of me driving slower than the rate of speed at which I would like to be traveling. So I’m behind this guy… I’m not right up on him, but I’m definitely close enough to let him know that I’m back there and he needs to get into the right lane so I can pass. Of course he doesn’t get over so I continue on behind him for this 8th of a mile until it’s time for me to turn left. As I slow down to take the left he gives me the bird as he’s speeding off. WTF? Obviously he was pissed that I was following him a little closely. If only he knew that you’re supposed to keep right except to pass, he wouldn’t have been in the left lane and gotten all pissed off when I wanted to pass him.

I’m convinced a lot of people just don’t know this rule, and in some ways it’s almost forgivable because they don’t really TEST you for your license in Tennessee. At least not in Rutherford County where I was tested. At test time the trooper and I got in the car, we drove around the block, and that was it. I passed and got my license. I think the State should send out little tips and reminders to everyone along with their electric bill. Stuff like, “Just a reminder to keep right except to pass when driving!” Or, “Be sure to turn your headlights on when it’s raining!” Just print it right at the bottom of the electric bill in a good sized font. I think it could really help things.

Live 8

July 2nd, 2005 | 11:09 am cdt

Live 8 is in full swing. I’ve been listening on XM which will be broadcasting everything, live. Everyone can watch or listen live courtesy of music.aol.com. (You don’t have to be an AOL member.) I believe MTV is covering quite a bit this afternoon along with VH1. Just typing Live 8 into Flickr also brings back quite a few photos from the event. There’s a lot of good music to be heard out there, and it’s for a good cause, so listen in.
