Graduation and such

May 25th, 2005 | 10:59 pm cdt

Been busy the last couple weeks and just haven’t had the time to post much. This past weekend I flew up to Massachusetts to see The Captain graduate from UMASS. It’s so weird to be able to drive through three states in an hour up there. Providence was very nice. Got to check out RISD and walk around Brown a bit. It was cold as balls up there, but still fun.

I recently saw Hitchhikers again and really enjoyed it the second time around. It helps to see it again without any expectations. And of course I had to see Episode III at midnight last Wednesday. It’s certainly the best of the recent three, but it’s still a Star Wars movie.

Aside from all that, just been busy doing a little freelance work. I hope to have some new work to share soon.

K-town Weirdness

May 16th, 2005 | 2:07 am cdt

I should just rename this blog “The Knoxville Chronicles” with the amount of K-town stories I post up here. This time our tale comes to us in the form of a day-trip to Knoxville to pack up Ernie’s studio, load it all up in the van, and head back to Nashville. That’s about as sensible as this story is going to get.

After packing up Ernie’s studio and loading it into the van we stop off at a Sushi bar in downtown Knoxville to eat with some of the UT painting majors. That place was quite amusing. Between Ernie and Rachel exchanging pleasantries about eachother’s parents, the sushi bar provided one ridiculous event after another: Hot water, hot towels, no napkins, blank walls, weird-ass drinks, some tiny-ass california rolls (We’re talking super tiny), wasabi bets, awkward interjections and plain foolishness from the 5 of us sitting at the table.

After the sushi bar we head off to Ernie’s friend’s/former prof’s house for a dinner party and to store some painting material. The average age of the attendees was twice that of my age. The food however was splendid. Ernie got to hold kittens. (That image just plain scares me, btw.) So after we eat we proceed to cary mass amounts of canvas and plexiglas material through the middle of this diner party that’s going on in the living room. Right after the materials are stored and in place we proceed to jet out of there extremely prematurely without even getting to meet the girl in the glasses.

After the quick dinner party we drive all of about 2 blocks over to this other house to pick up some stuff that belongs to someone who doesn’t even live there any more. Confused? Earlier in the day we dropped off a wicker trunk at a house that had no one home. After the pick-up we went back to the wicker trunk house to leave a sander, again with no one home. Yet the wicker we left earlier had managed to disappear.

After our moving escapade a trip to the library was in order to drop off some books. But before that, Ernie wanted to go to Kinkos and photocopy some of the articles in the books he was about to return. So half way through all this photocopy business I finally have to ask, “Why don’t you just check the books out again next semester?” Upon hearing my question a realization is reached in Ernie’s mind, something along the lines of “dammit” is muttered and we’re on our way to the library to ditch these books until next semester.

Such is the weirdness from K-town on Saturday, and I totally forgot to mention the giant UT warehouse completely full of toiletpaper. I wish I had taken a picture of that one.

Weekend Wrap-up

May 9th, 2005 | 8:27 am cdt

Spent Friday evening at the BlogNashville Welcome Party down at the GEC associating many faces with the local blogshpere. Among others I had the pleasure of meeting the master of ceremony himself, Mr.Roboto, Viva la Lesley, Britteny, and oddly enough, the LindaDblu Fan Club.

Saturday I was able to catch up on a truckload of freelance work, before heading over to the Rents’ for Sunday Mother’s Day brunch. Between brunch and sending my little brother off for his first day of work, a good majority of the day was actually spent with my Dad, driving all over Nashville shopping for shoes. We found none, but I did get to see the space that the Apple Store will soon be entering at the Green Hills Mall.

Art Shows & Car Accidents

May 6th, 2005 | 6:44 pm cdt

Last night after work I met with Daniel for coffee and to discuss our latest book project. Normally it takes no less than a gallon of Mountain Dew for me to even begin to feel the effects of caffeine, but between my empty stomach and this potent brew, I was vibrating.

So after meeting with Daniel I jitter on down to the Harding Art Show and check out the wares. I was really surprised at the amount of work that was on display. Most of it was your typical impressionistic looking stuff, but there were a couple artists that had some unique work on display.

After the art show I make my way home with a headache from coming down off the coffee I had earlier. I just wanted to get home and get some food in my body. As I’m getting off 65 onto Old Hickory Blvd. East, I come to the first traffic-light where they’re building the new Target. I stop at the light. A car behind me pulls up and stops. We’re all just sitting around waiting for the light to change. Finally, the light turns green and WHAM! The car behind me is pushed into my car by a third car! A nice 3 car pile-up. So I get out of my car expecting to see my bumper lying on the asphalt. Instead, the guy that plowed into the car behind me is standing there with his arm extended ready to make introductions. Meanwhile the girl who was in the car that was pushed into my car is freaking out. She’s trying to call the police but is too nervous, so she hands me the phone. After I’m done on the phone, the way-too-happy-to-be-in-a-car-accident guy who tried to drive his car straight through us is trying to make small talk asking us how many miles per gallon we get and how everything is going. Of course I’m thinking, “We’re dealing with a 3 car accident, standing out in the middle of Old Hickory Blvd. like a bunch of fools, how do you think we’re doing?”

Anyway… Eventually we realize there’s really no damage to any of the cars(amazingly enough. He pushed the car behind me a good 6-8 feet.) and we decided to just exchange info and head our separate ways. At that point I was ready to just get home, get to bed, and let this day be over with.
